Aveiro City Council Municipal Archive
1.Mission:
The mission of the Municipal Archive of Aveiro City Council is to safeguard the documentation produced by the City Council and the municipal bodies, in the course of their activity, and that of entities, private or otherwise, that wish to preserve their documentary collections, as well as all documentation that, not having this origin, has been entrusted to it by any historical circumstance; in this context, the valorisation and dissemination of this documentary heritage, fundamental for the construction of the memory of the municipality, gains special relevance.
2. Collection:
The Municipal Archive is composed of the funds of the Aveiro City Council, the Aveirense Theatre, the Aveiro/Santa Joana Museum and the Municipal Photographic Archive|Imagoteca.
3 Services:
The Municipal Archive offers universal and free access to documents produced by the municipality itself or from other sources, including religious and civil institutions linked to Aveiro or even collections of interest to the history and knowledge of the city and the municipality. The documentation of the Municipal Archive existing in the Atlas concerns the oldest nucleus of the same.
4. Reproduction of documents:
This is subject to some restrictions taking into account the type of document, its state of conservation and the purpose for which it is intended. The use of reproduction for publication purposes is subject to authorisation by the Municipality of Aveiro. The issue of copies and certificates, as well as the respective fees, will be regulated by the Municipal Regulation of Fees and Other Revenues of the Municipality of Aveiro.
5. Opening hours to the public:
Monday to Friday, from 10 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and from 1.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m.
Municipal Archive Services
- The Municipal Archive is composed of the funds of the Aveiro City Council, the Aveirense Theatre, the Aveiro Museum / Santa Joana and the Photographic Archive | Municipal Imagoteca.
- In-person consultation of originals is available to all users of the Archive.
- Depending on the intended objectives, the support of the Municipal Archive team will translate, from the outset, into the dispensation of the requested documents. In the case of research projects on Local History, this service will also provide the researcher(s) with support in the search and localisation of information that may enhance the research in question.

- Once you have identified the document(s) to be consulted, you must fill in the form with all the requested data, through the Aveiro City Council website, clicking here.
The Municipal Archive is responsible for the coordination of municipal editions or those supported by the Aveiro City Council. In this context, it is responsible for providing all the necessary support to local authors (editorial support, launch of works and sale of publications).
The reproduction of documents is subject to certain restrictions taking into account the type of documents, their state of conservation and the purpose for which they are intended.
The payment of reproductions is subject to the provisions of the Municipal Regulation of Fees and other Revenues here.
